Cats, dogs, parrots - pets familiar to us. However, they all bring a lot of trouble, need attention, often violate the calm atmosphere in the house with sounds. But there are calm pets. Only now for many people they cause fear and horror. These pets are tarantulas with a Latin name Brachypelma emilia.
What are these spiders?
Brachypelma Emilia is a species of spider from the genus Brachypelma. Under natural conditions, they live in semi-desert areas of Mexico. Spiders prefer to hide under the roots of trees, stones, sometimes dig holes. The tarantulas attracted the attention of a man by their large size. For example, an adult female has the following parameters:
- body size - about 6.5 cm;
- paw span - up to 12.5 cm;
- weight - from 15 to 16 g.
But not only the size of the tarantula interested people. The main advantage of the spider is its original color. The body of the individual has a dark color. On the paws there are patches of red or orange hue. On the back is a black triangle. That he distinguishes this spider from other members of the genus Brachypelma.
Are they dangerous?
Brahipelma Emilia scares with its rather large size and unusual name "tarantula". At this list of frightening characteristics ends. Such a spider can be easily purchased as an exotic pet. For a man, he does not pose any danger. Of course, he can bite. The spider does not get used to its owner. However, the owner most often provokes attacks. The person at improper handling frightens a spider. Pet bites back, because it feels in danger and tries to protect itself.
“I almost died from the bite of the spider Brachypellm Emilia!” Such inventions are found on the Internet. They are published for the entertainment of readers, but not for education. In fact, Brachypelma emilia basically makes a “dry bite”. He introduces poison very rarely, but even if it happens, a person is not in danger. Spider bites are similar to wasps.
Beware of this exotic pet is necessary only for people with high sensitivity to insect bites. From contact with the spider is to save children and other pets. Some spawners talk about the death of cats after bites. Another important nuance is that it is impossible to place several tarantulas on one terrarium. The strongest individual will kill and eat others.
Where to keep an exotic pet?
For the spider-tarantula Brahipelma, Emilia is required to create favorable conditions for habitat. In the terrarium as a litter you can put the coconut substrate. Ordinary land is not suitable, as it contains a huge variety of microorganisms that can harm the spider. It is also important to purchase:
- tweezers (for those who are afraid to take cockroaches in their hands, remove slaughtered food from the terrarium, spider skin after shedding);
- drinking bowl;
- decorative elements (some broken coconuts, jugs, which could serve as an inverted form of shelter for the tarantula).
Humidity in the terrarium is recommended to be maintained at the level of 60-70%. This indicator is achieved due to the presence of a drinker in the terrarium and spraying of 1/3 of the substrate. Favorable temperature for a spider is 25–28 ° C. It is very important not to expose your exotic pet to sudden changes in temperature. Under such conditions, the spider may die.
What does a tarantula eat?
Brahipelma Emilia can eat and various insects, and small animals. When choosing victims, the owners first look at the size of their pet. Feed taken such that no more than the body of the tarantula. Small marble cockroaches are best suited for small spiders. About 5 insects are enough for a week. Adults are fed 1 time in 2 weeks. They continue to offer cockroaches. Also, the diet of spiders may consist of flies, grasshoppers, locust, newborn mice.
Food for the tarantula can be found in pet stores. Do not be afraid to take cockroaches. If they escape from a can or box, they will not live in an apartment anyway. They (precisely marble cockroaches) need completely different living conditions.
How fast does a spider grow?
The tarantula of Brachypelma emilia is characterized by very slow growth. Females become sexually mature by 3-4 years, and males - by 2.5 years. Periodically spiders molt. This process means the growth of individuals. Inexperienced owners moult scares. Before her, the spider refuses to eat, weaving a web in the terrarium.
At one of the stages of molting, you can see that the tarantula is lying on its back up with its paws. Do not be afraid and think that the spider is dead. In this position, the individual is a few hours. After molting in the terrarium, you can already see the spider in its normal form and its discarded pelt. The tarantula seems more beautiful. Colors after shedding acquire brightness.
How do spiders breed?
The breeding process is very interesting in the Mexican Brachypelma emilia spider. A male is prepared for it after molting. At night in his terrarium, he weaves a special web, climbs under it and releases a drop of semen. After that, the spider crawls out from under the cobweb and sits on top of it and captures this drop with a copulative device (bulbs with hooks). Further, the tarantula is noticeably changing behavior. He becomes more active, constantly striving to get out of the terrarium. This is a sign that the pet is ready for fertilization.
Before mating, the owner is recommended to feed the female. She must be full. This is necessary so that the female does not eat the male after fertilization. After mating, the male is deposited in the terrarium where he lived before. Brahipelma Emilia, after some time after successful fertilization, begins to weave a nest. She lays eggs in it. At the very end, the spider braids the clutch, forms a cocoon in the form of a ball. The period of incubation begins, lasting about 92 days. After a specified period of time small spiders are selected from the cocoon.
It is worth noting that individuals differing by sex have a different life expectancy. The males are observed to live about 3 years. In females, this figure is much higher. They live for about 20 years with proper care.
