The cylinder block is cast from aluminum alloy using GDC technology. In order to increase the rigidity of the main unit, the main bearings are closed with a bottom integral cover, which is attached to the unit with 24 bolts. For cooling in the block of cylinders special channels through which liquid for cooling flows are used. In order to lubricate the pistons, crankshaft and connecting rods, as well as to supply oil to the oil injectors, a whole system of special horizontal channels is used. The front part of the block is equipped with a vertical channel in order to be able to supply oil to the cylinder head.

The cylinder head is cast from aluminum alloy. The timing is based on two camshafts (DOHC). The camshafts are driven by a chain connected to the crankshaft. In the cylinder head is also bed for camshafts. It has rocker arms, which are part of the VTEC system. The engine uses new modern materials, which reduced the mass of the springs and the likelihood of resonant oscillations.

Crankshaft and camshafts

The crankshaft is made of steel and is a five-bearing. Subject to the use of the balance shaft assembly, eight counterweights are installed on the crankshaft. If the balancing shaft unit is missing, then only four counterbalances are used. Oil to the crankshaft is supplied using a special channel, which is held from the side of the main cylinder block. On the toe of the engine crankshaft are the gears of the camshaft drive mechanism and the oil pump drive.


Each camshaft performs its function: one of them actuates the intake valves, the other - the exhaust. Adjustment of the K20A engine valves and the clearance in their drive is made using special adjustment screws. Each camshaft has five bearing journals. In order to lubricate the cams and necks using engine oil, it first enters the rocker arm unit for the VTEC system, then into special oil channels, which are located on the camshaft in the second supporting neck. Adjusting the valve timing on the intake valves is automatic and is carried out using the VTC system.

Timing chain and drive chain tensioner

The timing mechanism in this type of engine is driven by a chain transmission. There is a special tensioner that works due to oil pressure and automatically adjusts the tension of the timing chain. To eliminate unnecessary oscillations of the chain, there are special dampeners that are mounted on the top and on the side. In order to reduce the amount of noise during operation of the timing chain, a reduction in the drive chain pitch has been implemented.

Cooling and lubrication system

The K20A engine is equipped with a closed-type liquid cooling system. Cooling fluid circulation is forced. The belt, which serves to actuate the mounted units, also drives the cooling fluid pump. A thermostat with an overflow valve designed to maintain the optimum temperature of the cooling system is located in the coolant inlet. This device determines which circle, small or large, to let the liquid to cool through the radiator.

The oil used to lubricate the engine undergoes full-flow cleaning and is supplied under pressure to the main moving parts and engine components. Used trochoid type oil pump. Inside this pump there are two rotors - the master and the slave; their engagement is internal. And they rotate in one direction. The pump is driven by a chain from the crankshaft. The oil filter is at the bottom in a horizontal position. Fuel injection to the K20A engine: device and characteristic

The fuel injection system used in this engine is the PGM - FI system (or PGI - Programmed Fuel Injection), which allows for consistent multipoint injection.

The installed fuel pressure regulator makes it possible to control the pressure under which with the help of a pump the fuel is supplied through a special filter to all the injectors. In order to simplify the fuel system, save space and increase the reliability of the fuel injection system and its operation, fine and coarse fuel filters, a sensor for indicating the fuel level, and a fuel pressure regulator are located in the fuel pump housing.


Based on the readings of various sensors, the control unit regulates the amount of mixture that is needed for injection, the composition of the mixture and the ignition timing. In accordance with the indications of the oxygen sensor and the mixture composition sensor, which is installed in front of the catalyst in the exhaust system, the control unit can set different air-fuel mixture compositions. In addition, it calculates the amount of fuel supplied to the K20A engine per cycle of operation, and does this in the following sequence:

  1. A decision is made as to whether fuel should be injected.
  2. The definition of the mode in which the car is moving begins. For this mode, the position is calculated in which the accelerator pedal is located. It also determines the speed of the vehicle and the frequency with which the crankshaft rotates by reading the sensor signals.
  3. A preliminary calculation of the amount of fuel injected begins, based on the frequency with which the crankshaft rotates and on the readings given by the absolute air pressure sensor in the intake manifold. At the same time, the best fuel economy parameters are achieved when driving in different modes.
  4. The control unit re-reads the signals supplied by the sensors: throttle valve positions, intake air temperature, coolant temperature, atmospheric pressure device, oxygen level, mixture composition, battery voltage, electropneumatic valve opening in the recirculation system. Based on these readings, amendments are made to the calculated amount of fuel.
  5. The concluding action - the control system gives a signal about how much fuel must be supplied to the system.

In order to improve efficiency, to ensure complete combustion of the fuel and for its better dispersion, special nozzles are used, which have 8–9 holes each.

The control unit reads information from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors in order to determine which of the cylinders needs to be fed at the moment, as well as the injection timing.

The control unit is equipped with a function of protection against excessive overload. This allows you to automatically stop fuel injection in the event that the crankshaft rotates at a frequency that exceeds the maximum permissible. As a result of such manipulations, the engine speed drops.


It is worth noting the diagnostic system, which is equipped with a K20A engine. Characteristics and work process consists of the following items:

  1. The electronic control unit (ECU) is equipped with a built-in self-diagnostic system, which continuously monitors the state of the engine according to signals from various sensors. In the event of a malfunction, the system identifies it and notifies the driver by activating the Check Engine indicator on the instrument panel. When this happens, the corresponding diagnostic code of the ISO 15031-6 standard and the manufacturer's codes are recorded directly in the computer memory.
  2. In order to read diagnostic codes, you need to connect a special scanner to the DLC connector. There is the ability to delete codes and read Freeze Frame data using a scanner. The connector for diagnostics is made according to the SAE standard, and conclusion No. 7 is made in accordance with the international ISO standard.   3. When recording most of the codes, an algorithm consisting of two stages is applied. It is used in such a way that when a malfunction is first manifested, its code is temporarily recorded in the computer memory. If this fault appears again at the next operating cycle, then the Check Engine indicator will work in this case. Driving test number 2 is carried out in the same way and with the same driving mode, but the prerequisite is that between cycles it is required to turn off the ignition.
  4. If any malfunction occurs, the conditions under which it arose are recorded in the computer memory (Freeze Frame).

Air intake systems and additional air supply

The intake manifold mounted on the K20A engine is located at the front, between the radiator and the cylinder head. Exhaust - on the contrary, behind, near the location of the partition of the engine compartment.

Additional air is supplied to the injectors using a separate system. The fuel injected into the engine goes through a stage of mixing with the supplied air, which helps the fuel to evaporate better and prepare a more efficient fuel-air mixture.
