In May, a deaf buzz rang out through the gardens and orchards of our country - the May beetles went fishing. These insects of the platyla family are very common throughout Europe and Asia. Often they are also called crunches. Their first, more common, name is really due to the fact that they appear in May, although in cold years they can linger until June, and in the warm spring the hum of May beetles can be heard already in April. Who among us did not catch them in childhood - big, buzzing, a little bit scary. Strings were tied to them and allowed to fly around - a swarm of ridiculous points, entertainment for children.
Did you know that until the 50s of the 20th century the green beetle was a collective farm thunderstorm? These insects destroyed some plant species and caused significant damage to agriculture. Thanks to the use of pesticides, the green beetle was practically exterminated in some regions of the country, and in the rest of its population it decreased by several times. Natural equilibrium was restored only in the 80s, when the use of chemicals in agriculture was reduced.
What does a beetle look like? Photos of different species may differ: such as beetles are red and black. However, both species are characterized by a greenish shade of the head and pronotum. Because of this, it is often the opinion that the May beetle is green.
But why are these insects so popular? First of all, the fact that they are an excellent bait for fishing. These insects will be a tasty morsel for such river species of fish as chub, ide, chub and sabrefish.
For successful fishing with bait from the Maybeetle, you should use the same gear as for float fishing. An exception would be the absence of a sinker. The method of fishing in the Khrushchev is called “fly fishing” among fishermen.
In order for the beetle-fishing to be successful, besides the selection of tackle, you should also take care of the fishing spot. It should be located where the river has a strong current. The best choice would be the site where there is a tree and a twist.
Check whether the fish in the selected area of the reservoir is simple. It is enough to throw a few crunches into the water in turns and carefully observe them. If the insects are gone, it's time to uncover your fishing rods.
The last question is how to catch the cockchafer? Very simple. Morning and afternoon, he sits on the branches of trees. If you walk around the garden in the morning, you can get enough for fishing. Effectively also, passing, shake off the future bait from the branches of bushes and low-growing trees directly to the ground. After you have collected the insects, remember that you should bait the hook carefully, so as not to damage the vital organs. While the beetle is alive and moving its paws, it is of great value and interest to the fish, because some species of fish see only a moving target.
Now you know what a cockchafer is, a green plant pest, a great bait for fishermen, and just one of the symbols of the onset of heat in May, sunny summer and summer holiday in nature.
