Tenacious bedstrap - aggressive weed plant with healing properties

Tenacious bedstrap (also known as velcro, scratch or chain) is used in folk medicine to treat many ailments. Though he is a weed, healers have long been harvested during flowering to prepare their potions. Used inside as a decoction for the treatment of diseases of the liver, kidneys, intestinal tract. Infusions and ointments based on it were used for various skin diseases, and ulcers and wounds were sprinkled with powder.

Tenacious bedstarch (Galium aparine L.) is an annual herb of the marenov family type. The root system is pivotal. The stem of an adult plant is tetrahedral. In the presence of a number of supports, the bedstraw clings to it during intensive growth, rising upwards. In the open area the stem is recumbent. The leaves are wedge-shaped, lanceolate with a point. They are collected in whorls of 6-8 pieces. From above, the leaves and stem at the edges are covered with spines with downward curved edges and stiff bristles. These features make the whole plant very tenacious.

Blossom blooms from May to the end of June. Fruits in mid-summer to early September. Small flowers on the stem in the form of thorn. Corolla petals are white. It forms a small (1.5–3 mm) oblong fruit nutlet. They on one plant can be up to 500 pcs. The surface of the fruit is bristly, the color is gray-brown. The seed resembles a flat nut. It maintains vitality in the soil up to 5 years. May germinate from a depth of 6 cm.

Clutch stickstreet is ubiquitous. You can find it in forests, forest plantations, meadows, along roads and railway embankments. It grows in the midst of shrubs and in the open. Weeds litter gardens. Prefers fertile soils with good moisture. On such a soil it grows intensively, branching and exhibits environmental plasticity at a high level.

The plant is aggressive, clings to the adjacent species with bristles and hooks on the leaves, branches and often suppresses them with its growth. The crops of winter grain and spring crops of grain crops fall under its weight, which complicates their harvesting.

The first shoots under favorable conditions may appear by the end of September. They hibernate well and with the onset of heat actively grow. Seeds that have lain under the snow, germinate, depending on the region in March or April.

Bedstrap Tenacious: Countermeasures

Propagated by seeds. Therefore, the best protection against contamination of the plot is to clean the seed at the stage of harvesting or during storage. Seed material from the bedtime bed separates quite well. The autumn shoots of this weed, which were hibernating and appeared in early spring in cultivated crops, are destroyed during harrowing.

The March and April shoots in most cases are destroyed by tillage before sowing the main crops. In tilled crops, the main measures to combat it are agrotechnologies. A high resistance of the weed to herbicides of the groups 2, 4-D and 2M-4X, used in the processing of grain crops, was noticed. There is a positive experience in dealing with a bed-bed with soil preparations, such as Simazin, Prometrin, and Dialen, as well as when treated with a mixture of propionic acid herbicides.

The chemical composition is not well studied, as the plant is not used in official medicine. There is evidence that it contains saponins, as well as gallic, citric and rubichloric acids, monotropein, flavonoids, vitamin C, hydrocarbons and other active compounds. Of the trace elements are zinc, copper, iron, boron, strontium and others.
