What is the name of a fish with a long nose?

Freshwater fish paddlefish is a member of the family of Paddlefish, detachment of Sturgeon, species of Luciferous.

Why does a fish have a long nose?

Until recently, scientists believed that it serves only for the extraction of food from the bottom of reservoirs. However, recent studies have shown that the snout of the paddlefish for several kilometers can feel the approach of fish and other inhabitants of the waters, and also helps to strike and chase prey.

Fish with a long nose, the name of which is paddlefish, is a large fish weighing from 70 to 80 kg, reaching a length of 200 cm. Awesome, an unusual look is attached to it by a snout (nose-paddle), or rostrum - elongated anterior skull bones. The nose has a length equal to one third of the length of the whole fish. At the base of the snout are small eyes. On the lower surface of the rostrum, there is an organ of touch, a small antenna. The younger generation has a large number of small sharp teeth.

The body of the paddlefish without scales, completely naked. The color of the back is dark gray, there is a lighter shade on the belly and on the sides. On the back there is one fin, shifted closer to the tail part of the body.

There are paddlefish from 20 to 30 years. However, among them there are elders who have reached the age of 55 years.

The fish with a long nose is very active and constantly in motion. Both in tributaries and in the Mississippi River itself paddlefish is found in the USA, and in addition, it can be found in the rivers that flow into the Gulf of Mexico.

It lives at a depth of about three meters, away from the coastline. In spring and summer time, paddlefish, being at the very surface of the water, can make jumps from it. During high tides, the fish goes to the lakes, and returns after the ebb of water.

Fish with a long nose - this is the only representative of the sturgeon, feeding on phyto- and zooplankton. Constantly open with a large mouth, paddlefish collects prey: algae, insects, worms, larvae, plankton. Once in the mouth through a network of long gill hairs, plankton is drained out and then sent to the stomach. He finds food for paddlefish with the help of the rostrum, he, like an antenna, picks up the oscillations of the electric field, which create small organisms in the reservoir.

Before spawning, in springtime, fish with a long nose gathers in flocks and goes upstream to select a breeding site. On lakes, preference is given to areas with stony ground at a depth of five to six meters at a water temperature of +16 degrees. Spawning in Mississippi begins in late April.

A female individual lays large eggs, which can reach 3 mm in diameter, and their number ranges from 80 to 250 thousand. On the tenth day the larvae appear. Juveniles quickly arrive in height and weight due to good nutrition. After two weeks, the nose-paddle begins to grow. In the year they already have a body length of about 70 cm. Young growth reaches puberty at 5–10 years. Males mature faster than females. The paddlefish do not breed annually. Spacing between spawning can be from 4 to 7 years.

Fishing, breeding

A fish with a long nose (photo below) is a commercial fish. At the beginning of the last century, its annual catches exceeded 600 tons. In the modern world, due to the active development of industry, the construction of dams and, as a result, pollution of water bodies, catches in the USA have significantly decreased. In recent years, attempts have been made to artificially reproduce paddlefish.

In the 70s of the 20th century, attempts were made to acclimatize the paddlefish in the fishing farms of Moldova and in the Krasnodar Territory. On planes, caviar was delivered first to the Soviet Union, and then to fish farms. It is noted an interesting fact that in captivity of puberty the fishes reached much earlier. Females spawned at the age of two years, and males - one year. And currently, paddlefish is successfully bred in fish farms of the Kostroma and Voronezh regions, in Primorye. You can hunt it on private ponds. A normal worm is used as bait. They are fishing for feeder, bottom gear.

Fish with a long nose, paddlefish, with the status of a threatened species was included in the lists of the International Red Book.

Fish are contained in artificial ponds with vegetation and silt, up to two meters deep and covering about 70 hectares. Water temperature is maintained at 22-25 degrees. By the age of 2–3 years, paddlefish gains weight from 2.5 to 5 kg. About 100 kg are grown per hectare with an average fish weight of 2 kg.

Paddlefish meat is rich in microelements, fatty acids and vitamins. Caviar and meat are expensive. Black caviar is not inferior to sturgeon in quality and value. The fish has an excellent taste and is used for the preparation of many culinary masterpieces: kebab, fish soup, balyk, preserved food.

Fish with a sharp long nose

Istiophoridae (marlin) is a fish with an interesting structure of the muzzle, which develops speed under water up to 110 km / hour. The nose is spear-shaped, long, thin. Two dorsal fins located close to each other. The back of the fish is dark blue, and the sides have a silvery shade. The body is powerful, somewhat flattened in the sides. Marlin feeds on tuna, crabs, shrimps, and bottom organisms.

Males of blue marlin are four times less in weight than females. Marlin is ready for breeding for three years. Fish spawn from August to November, sometimes breeding four times per season. Fertility is high, up to 7 million eggs. Larvae develop very quickly, they can grow from 1 to 16 mm per day. The younger generation has a blue color on the back and white on the abdomen. Tail and fin light blue.

What is the name of a fish with a long nose?

Famous representatives of fish with a long nose, except for the paddlefish, include:

  • The swordfish is a predator weighing up to 400 kg, more than 3 meters long. The nose resembles a military lethal weapon - a sword approximately 1–1.5 m long. With its nose the fish easily pierce a board made of oak and metal 2.5 cm thick, and it itself is practically not injured. The impact force of the nose sword is about 400 tons.
  • Flute fish lives in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, in the Red Sea. The nose resembles a musical instrument. For the purpose of disguise, it can change color. Slowly approaching its prey, and then grabs it.
  • Saw fish - inhabitant of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the Mediterranean Sea. Fish weight reaches 300 kg, and body length - 5 meters or more. Nose-saw ½ length from the body of a predator is the main weapon for catching prey. Some species of these fish are able to breed without the participation of males in the process.
