A graveyard is not only a place to bury dead people. If its roots go back many centuries, on the territory there are significant architectural structures, then it may well become a historical monument, like the Baykovo cemetery in Kiev.

It received its name from the name of the area, which was named after the name of Sergey Baikov, who has a cottage nearby. At the beginning of the 19th century, when the churchyard was opened, only Catholics and Lutherans found rest in it. But after three years, they immediately began to bury the Christians. Over time, Baikovo cemetery has grown. Currently, its new part is three times larger than the old one, and the total area is about 73 hectares.

It is impossible to find identical tombs, as each family built them according to their taste and traditions. During the war years, Jewish families sheltered from fascist invaders in the crypts, in peacetime, homeless people often hide here.

Merciless time

To restore order came in the 40s of the XIX century Krause. The territory has been expanded, refined. Even a room was built for the convenience of the cemetery workers and a chapel was erected. Now, when mass graves are not being kept, the trees that were planted by Krause's order have grown and the churchyard began to resemble a forest. Monuments and crypts are in a dilapidated state. This is especially true of those that were set up when Baikovo cemetery was just beginning its existence. There are about 190, 000 graves on it.

After death - in its place

An interesting fact is that the cemetery is divided into certain sectors. People who belong to certain societies and after death should lie next to each other. For example, there are areas where only professors and teachers of the Kiev Scientific University were buried. Others are intended for participants of the Great Patriotic War and other wars. On the main alley are the graves of famous statesmen, as well as artists, writers and other equally famous personalities.

There are sectors in which the burial was made on a national basis. Among them are plots of land on which Jews, Poles, Germans rest. The architecture of monuments and tombstones is interesting, which also has its national features, as well as epitaphs in various languages. You can enter the cemetery, depending on religion, through one of the gates. Their appearance resembles the temples of various religious denominations. There are three entrances: for Catholics, Lutherans and Orthodox.

People familiar to many

In the old cemetery is the grave of Lesia Ukrainka. This is a famous poetess, writer and social activist of Ukraine. Throughout her life, she fought against diseases that began to overcome her at the age of ten. It is hard to imagine how a person who is constantly in pain could have such strength of mind that he did not just live, but created and gained fame. But no matter how hard Lesia tried, the disease defeated her in 1913, when she was only 42 years old. Her real name was Larisa Petrovna Kosach. It is embossed on a pedestal under a pseudonym. Relatives of the writer are buried nearby. The tomb is still visited by admirers of her talent, although more than 100 years have passed since her death. The monument is a high podium and a half-figure of Ukrainka standing on it, holding a book in its hands.

The figure of a man leaning on an umbrella is noticeable from a distance. This is the first monument that was installed on the new cemetery in full growth. In order to make it, the widow of the famous actor Nikolai Grinko sold all the jewels. She did it for a reason, and admirers visiting his grave are pleased to see a well-kept plot and a good monument. They loved this artist and the children, because he played the father of Carlo in the movie “The Adventures of Buratino” and the engineer Gromov in “The Adventures of Electronics”.

As an everywhere

Here you should definitely visit lovers of antiquity, sculpture, architecture, or those who prefer to think about the meaning of life and the eternal, walking in silence among burial grounds. During these trips come across very interesting and unusual monuments, established by ordinary people to their relatives. For example, the figures of people, completely repeating the appearance of a person during his lifetime. Some are waiting for their loved ones, stretched to their full height, others are sitting, waiting for them to sit down to remember. Monuments to dancers depict them in dance, the pilots here with their planes or details from them, the writers with the heroes of their work. On the other graves - angels in full growth, crosses, candles, flowerpots, etc.

Crypts at Baikove Cemetery

Perhaps this is the most unusual for our time, mysterious, attracting attention and at the same time the most frightening of all that can be seen here. Old buildings made in various techniques should have been preserved for posterity as interesting specimens of past years funerary architecture. But, oddly enough, at the Baikovo cemetery, they gradually collapse and fall into disrepair.

They don’t even count them and they don’t even know to whom some of them belonged, whose names were erased from time to time. The most unpleasant thing is that coffins with decayed remains of people who had taken care to rest in a beautiful, prestigious place had disappeared from the crypts. Inside is empty and dirty. Informal youth, homeless and homeless people are not afraid to come here. They spoil and stain what is left of the former decoration.

But before (as far as can be judged by what was left), the crypts looked decent. After all, to build them, funds were needed, and not every family could afford it. But it happened that those who dared to take this step, even invited famous architects of their time to build a tomb on a special project. And at the Baikovo cemetery you can find crypts made in various styles. Here there is a classic, and gothic, and a mixture of directions, in accordance with the taste of the owners. Inside the tomb had two rooms. The first was intended to commemorate the departed, and the second, in which there were coffins with bodies, went underground.

Lucky tomb

On the territory of the cemetery there is one crypt that has its own legend. It belonged to the famous Kiev sausage maker Mikhail Aristarkhov. On the facade of the tomb there is a bronze bas-relief with the image of the Archangel, in whose honor Michael was named. About him it is known that he defeated Lucifer himself.

If, standing in front of the crypt, you see on the shoulder of the sculpture a burn mark, a place from which an all-conquering beam of light struck, then the help of the Archangel will not take long to wait, and he will take care of the attentive at the tomb of his namesake.

In addition, Michael of Kiev is considered the patron saint of the entire city. And Aristarkhov himself owned a sausage factory, engaged in politics to promote his interests in the Duma, was a church warden. But wealth, as is known, is not a panacea for ills and illnesses, and in 1912 he died and was honored to be buried here in his own crypt, made in the Gothic style.

Crematorium at the Baikovo Cemetery in Kiev

Seeing this structure for the first time, not everyone can immediately guess what it is. No wonder famous architects Abraham Miletsky, Ada Rybachuk and Vladimir Melnichenko worked on its creation from 1968 to 1981. The building resembles something futuristic. The entrance to the unknown and the unknown.

The spouses Melnichenko and Rybachuk imagined the crematorium in exactly this way. He should not have been reminded of death as the final stop in the existence of man. On the contrary, the architectural delicacy of those present at the cremation ceremony was reminded that life goes on, and the movement does not stop for those who have suffered an irreparable loss.

The architects took care to make the time of parting less painful and to psychologically facilitate parting with a deceased relative or friend. Since they had to create at the time when all actions had to be coordinated with the party, they did not manage to realize all the ideas. And some have become technically impossible. For example, colored stained glass windows, which were supposed to be located all along the concrete walls.

To create the Wall of Memory was banned by order of the Secretary of the Communist Party of Ukraine Scherbitsky. The party leadership was embarrassed by the non-Slavic noses of the sculptures that were supposed to be installed on it. It was decided to fill the wall with concrete. The management did not bother even the fact that the masters had been working on it for 10 years. During this period, they made life-size sculptures, welded frames for them, laid the first layer of soil. But on the other hand, the architects managed to achieve the feeling of lightness, which is difficult to do when erecting buildings made of reinforced concrete. The above-ground part is just an entrance under the ground, where the crematorium itself is located, where there is also a hall for farewell.

How to get to the Baikovo cemetery (Kiev)

Make it very easy. We must get to the metro station "Palace of Ukraine", and from there walk. The path will take 15-20 minutes. It is impossible to get lost, since the cemetery is located on a hill, to which it is necessary to climb and, besides, it is fenced with a red brick fence. Excursions are held on its territory, during which the guide tells interesting and detailed about everything that is here, and about people who have been at peace here. For those who want to visit the cemetery on their own, the address for help is: st. Baikova, 2. It is not recommended to go far inland, as you can easily get lost among overgrown graves.

Save for posterity

Old-timers say that before the revolution, it was customary to look after even those graves that were abandoned by relatives or belonged to single people. The watchman worked here, there were pointers to the graves of famous people, special cemetery guides were issued. It is a pity that many monuments and tombs in our time are destroyed.

One can only guess what is going on in the minds of people who can cope with the need for a crypt or a grave. But the fact remains. At the Baikovo Cemetery there is a lot of garbage and bushes. Drug addicts, goths and other non-formals gather here, who don’t care about who is buried here. Therefore, they are not shy to behave in an inappropriate way and desecrate monuments and tombstones.

But there are those who are interested in the history of people who have found rest here. Moreover, many of those who are buried here are known not only in Ukraine, but also abroad.
