- Civil version
In a wide variety of knives a special place is occupied by combat models. Despite the development of military technology and weapons, a simple knife to this day is an effective assistant in melee combat. Therefore, all the armies of the world are working to improve the characteristics of the combat knife. Despite the fact that the design of knives has been studied from time immemorial, this trend still has great potential for development. It is mainly about creating highly specialized models that could most effectively solve a specific task. One of these knives is the Kochergin knife. Today we will get acquainted with its structure, principle of work and the opinion of experts regarding this model.
History of creation
Kochergin's combat knife was created exclusively for the hand-to-hand combat system developed by the St. Petersburg Center for Applied Research. In developing the design of this knife, the authors tried to take into account precisely the requirements for weapons that the mentioned system makes, not taking into account any weapon trends. The first task of the designers was to find ways to achieve the maximum stopping effect of the knife by increasing its cutting ability during the stabbing. As the practice of working with weapons, in the framework of the system created by the center, the injection is the most effective method of knife attack. Work on the development and testing of the NDK-17 model lasted seven years and led to a significant result. In 2008, the knife Kochergina, which received a very unusual shape, was presented to the public.
As you probably guessed, the abbreviation of the NDK stands for "sabotage knife Kochergin." "17" is the initial approved blade length. In the course of practical experience, it was reduced to 15 cm in order to improve the balance and maneuverability of the product, but the name was decided to remain the same. Many interpret the abbreviation of the NDK as “Kostergina’s amphibious assault rifle, ” but this is not true. With the name sorted out, but who is this Kochergin? Andrei Nikolaevich Kochergin is a martial arts master and the founder of the Russian school of karate Koi but takinoboriru (or simply KOI).
Andrey Nikolaevich was engaged in martial arts since 14 years. At first it was judo, and a little later - karate. Living in Germany, he mastered woo-chun and Thai boxing. Returning to his homeland, Kochergin actively engaged in daido juku. In addition to his wide experience in the field of martial arts, he also has military experience: he served in the army sport and reconnaissance, participated in the Caucasian campaign. Kochergin is a multiple winner of a shooting competition and a master of sports for shooting Makarov pistol. Andrei Kochergin is known to the general public through master classes and seminars on self-defense. He is the author of several books and a huge number of video clips devoted not only to self-defense, but also applied psychology.
The knife fighting style that operates under the KOI system is called Tanto Jutsu Koi but takoboriru. He became the first official knife fight style in Russia, which has been used in competitions since 1997. On the basis of Tanto Jutsu Koi, a domestic knife fight system was developed, specifically for which the NDK-17 knife was created (the knife of the saboteur of the Kochergin design).
The peculiarity of this application system is that combat tactics are based on technical brevity and the absence of symmetry in contact with cold weapons. Guided by this principle, the CPS team continuously develops and implements domestic methodologies for training special units in several areas:
- Applied hand-to-hand combat.
- Fire training.
- Group and tactical interaction.
The Kochergin Knife (NDK-17) is the result of the joint development of the Center for Strategic Research and the All-Russia Institute of Military Culture (Military Institute of Physical Culture). This product belongs to innovative inventions. Reviews of many domestic and foreign experts show that it is one of the most striking modern developments in the field of cold weapons.
The developers do not disclose the steel grade from which the original model is made. It is only known that the material successfully combines the high strength of the blade and good cutting properties. High hardness steels providing maximum cutting effect are quite brittle material. According to the creators of this knife, they managed to achieve a high cutting ability due to the introduction of an unusual design. As a result, a unique blade was created, which has no analogues in the world.
Requirements for combat knives
The main task facing a person using a combat knife is to hit the enemy or opponents in melee combat. According to expert reviews, a professional with an adequate level of training can use almost any tool in combat. Nevertheless, maximum efficiency is achieved with the help of special weapons designed exclusively for melee equipment. On this basis, a combat or sabotage knife should combine the following characteristics:
- The width of the blade is at least 2 cm. At the same time, by reducing the angle of sharpening, the cutting properties of the blade are increased. As a result, stabbing with such a knife leads to serious injuries and abundant blood loss.
- Uneven blade-shaped cutting edge. It has excellent cutting properties and allows the blade to leave wide and deep stab wounds.
- The presence of reverse sharpening. Increases the effectiveness of weapons and the convenience of working with them - no need to turn the knife when changing the direction of impact.
Today such forms of combat knife blade are popular:
- A “drop point” is a drop shape. The tip goes along the axis of the injection vector, which facilitates penetration into the target.
- "Clip-point". Has a cut edge and a good thrust.
- "Speer-point" - spear shape. Due to the low descents better suited for the injection than for a cut.
- Bowie. It has a straight or concave bevel on the butt.
- "Tanto." It has increased blade strength due to the bevel at the end of the blade. Well stabs and cuts.
- "Hawkbill" (kerambit) - a concave shape. It resembles a bird or animal claw. May inflict the strongest cutting wounds.
Custom solutions Kochergin
The Kochergin knife (NDK-17) has an unconventional wedge shape. A guillotine-type blade was used in the model, with an inclination relative to the axis of the handle and an angle at the apex. According to the authors, the model of weapon created by them is most effective within the framework of a specific martial arts system. This system illustrates the higher efficiency of cutting blows compared to the piercing. Considering that in modern military confrontation bullet-proof vests are widely used, stabbing blows to open areas of the body (arms, legs, neck and face) are not a significant damaging factor. The knife, developed by Kochergin and his colleagues, allows to produce the most effective stabbing blows and stop the enemy without causing him fatal damage.
Knives of dagger modifications inflict narrow puncture wounds on the enemy, and a guillotine-type blade can inflict a very wide frontal dissection. The diversionary knife of Kochergin is designed in such a way that the straight line connecting the tip of the blade and the place of the stop passes through the center of gravity and coincides with the direction of the rectilinear force. Due to the angular inclination of the blade relative to the handle, the pressure on the affected surface increases when the knife is pulled towards itself, which leads to an even more extensive dissection.
On the use of the blade of the sickle configuration of the creators of the knife NKD-17 pushed the ancient knives kerabit. They were known as early as the 12th and 13th centuries in the territories of the Malay Archipelago. Knives of this configuration are still common in the region as domestic tools and weapons for self-defense. In addition, they are one of the key attributes of local martial arts.
In the 70-80s of the last century on the demonstrations of martial arts masters from Southeast Asia, the technique of application of kerabits was demonstrated for the first time. Performances have produced a great resonance in martial arts schools around the world. As a result, the enthusiasm for such knives came to the west.
Karambits have unique properties and great potential for modernization in the light of current trends in the development of knives. Today, the main direction of development of combat knives is the transition from thrusting to cutting. When cutting crescent patterns have the maximum effect. However, the ability to inflict piercing blows is extremely small. Another drawback of historical prototypes of the Kochergin knife is the fact that products of this shape are difficult to produce and maintain.
During the development of the Kochergin knife, a model was developed and approved in a form resembling a “straightened sickle”. She received a functional blade, which, when cut, exerts much more pressure than a straight blade model. The test results fully confirm the superiority of the NDK-17 over straight knives: from one cut, Kochergin’s knife cut 620 mm of pork sternal brisket. In this case, the damage was caused not only to the soft tissues, but also to the bone material of the ribs. Similar results can not achieve any of the currently known combat knives. One of the best combat knives in the world, "Tai Pen" with the same impact damage only 150 mm, and the powerful "Chinook" - no more than 200 mm.
In addition, at the top of the blade NDK-17 (subversive knife Kochergin) there is a corner. This is another important design feature and increases the pressure force by several times during the application of the cutting stroke. Relative to the handle, the blade of the knife is inclined by 20 degrees. Such a design, even in the case of a rectilinear motion, gives a cutting edge, which by its nature is very similar to the guillotine cut.
The square cross-section of the handle provides a more secure grip. The handle of the original model is covered with leather, which absorbs moisture well. Garda as such, the knife does not. Tests have shown that the handle of the described form allows you to secure the product as securely as possible in your hand and not to miss it in the process. Reviews by independent experts who test the knife fully confirm this.
The knife of the saboteur of the Kochergin design is balanced in such a way that the center of gravity falls into place, in which the blade connects with the handle. For combat knives, this centering is not new. It ensures maximum maneuverability of weapons when performing combat techniques.
Leather sheath for NDK-17 was the result of more than three years of development. It is mainly about their form. As a result, the resulting model of the scabbard is ideal for equipment of any kind. The knife fits into them tightly enough so as not to create any extraneous sounds when moving a fighter. In this case, the weapon is removed from the scabbard quickly and easily, even without prior training.
Blade processed using epoxy blackening - the most common method of processing knives in world practice. This measure not only protects it from corrosion, but also performs a masking function - it prevents the glare of the knife in the sun. Among other things, as the reviews show, the darkened blade looks more attractive.
The main working functions are assigned to the cutting edge of the blade. The creators decided to make one-sided sharpening chisel type on both parts of the blade. This allows you to achieve an acceptable impact power of the blade with a small angle of tightening, to make an accurate cut while pulling the blade towards you and to achieve maximum stability of the blade when performing a frontal injection. An important advantage of this sharpening is the fact that it is easy to edit. You can sharpen a knife even in field conditions without risking to dull the edges of the working edge.
The striking force of a knife cut depends not only on the pressure exerted on the target, but also on the friction force that occurs during the passage of the blade through the cut surface. On the bare side, the Kochergin knives have notches made with technical diamond. They can significantly increase the cutting power of the blade, but do not affect the speed and ease of striking. When testing a knife on various materials, the effectiveness of this constructive technique was confirmed.
According to the developers, the Kochergin knife (NDK-17) cannot be called a universal tool. It was designed specifically for the methodology of hand-to-hand combat, which is practiced at the Center for Applied Research. To use the sabotage knife Kochergin with the degree of efficiency that he can give, it is necessary to master the system of work with the weapon for which he was created.
CPI has created an applied hand-to-hand combat system using NDK-17, which is based on a massive enemy attack with a knife. During the fight the fighter moves only forward, without wasting time thinking and choosing a place to strike. The position of the body, as well as the movements of its individual parts, obey the same task - applying the maximum number of quality shots with maximum speed.
In the course of the research, all combat techniques, racks and movements were analyzed and carefully studied. The trajectories of all minor movements were reduced to the minimum necessary for a qualitative exit to the shock position. The principal advantage of this system is the full body work. The controlled movement around its axis allows you to invest body weight in each stroke. At the same time freedom of movement is preserved, as well as stability in space. And the increase in kinetic pressure has a positive effect on speed parameters without sacrificing maneuverability.
In our time, the appearance of cold weapons of unusual shape can often be completely unrelated to giving it fundamentally new characteristics. The main reasons are changes in production technology or aesthetic considerations, rather than a constructive need. Creating the Kochergin knife (NDK-17), the developers wanted to get improved cutting qualities and increased stopping effect by upgrading the design and searching for new solutions.
In the manufacture of working samples of various knives, such constructive solutions were repeatedly used as the blade guillotine shape, chisel sharpening and tilting of the blade with respect to the handle. The authors of this product managed to rationally combine these solutions and adapt the knife to a specially designed knife fight system. Thus, the main drawback of the model was its specificity. To effectively use the NDK (Kochergin sabotage knife), you must have special combat skills. However, techniques that are effective in working with such weapons may be much less effective in working with other knives. Combat techniques developed by the Center and the Kochergin knife are most effective in tandem. Therefore, to apply them individually is impractical.
Kochergin's knife: reviews
As mentioned above, the experts highly appreciate this model for its high performance and unique design. However, among lovers of opinion may diverge. On the Internet, this model received mixed reviews. You can find both enthusiastic and sharply critical reviews of the NDK-17. This is not surprising, given that the product was created exclusively for a specific combat technique, and only those who own this technique can appreciate it. And it is unlikely the developers of the knife thought about the opinions of the Internet public.
To date, the knife Kochergin, a photo of which looks very impressive, is not supplied to the armament or clothing support of law enforcement agencies. It is certified as a knife for household purposes. On sale you can find two versions of the product: the standard, with a 150-mm blade, and civil, with a 110-mm blade.
By virtue of its compactness, the civilian version is more suitable for wearing in urban conditions than the standard Kochergin knife. Folding version of the product is not and most likely will not. As a rule, such models are made of bearing steel. The large blade has a cutting edge slightly sharpened to one side. Complete with a knife comes with a leather sheath and a clip for attaching to the belt. Despite its specificity, such a knife can be a good gift or an unusual addition to the collection of cold weapons.
